Remembering the First Sikh Martyr on Shaheedi Gurpurab | 16 June 2026
The year was 1606.
People from different backgrounds were coming together and finding peace in the teachings of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. His message was simple: live honestly, help others, and remember Waheguru.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, dedicated his life to serving humanity. He completed Sri Harmandir Sahib, now known as the Golden Temple, and compiled the Adi Granth, preserving the teachings of the Sikh Gurus for future generations.
As the Sikh community grew, Guru Ji's influence spread far and wide. However, not everyone welcomed this growth. The rulers of the time pressured him to change his beliefs and teachings.
Guru Ji refused.
He believed that truth should never be changed out of fear.
As a result, he was arrested and taken to Lahore. Sikh history tells us that he was tortured and made to sit on a burning iron plate while hot sand was poured over his body.
The pain was severe, but Guru Ji did not let his faith break.
Instead, he remained calm and continued to remember Waheguru.
His words during those difficult moments are still remembered today:
"Tera Kiya Meetha Lage."
"Sweet is Your Will, O Lord."
These words showed his deep faith and complete trust in God.
In 1606, Guru Arjan Dev Ji became the first Sikh martyr. His sacrifice changed Sikh history forever and became a symbol of courage, faith, and standing up for what is right.
More than 400 years later, his story continues to inspire millions around the world. He reminds us that real strength is not shown when life is easy. Real strength is staying true to your values, even during the hardest times.
On 16 June 2026, as we observe Shaheedi Gurpurab, we remember Guru Arjan Dev Ji and the powerful legacy he left behind.
Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj. 🙏
